[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]

Name: Michelle Cheung
Age: 25
Gender: Female
Fandom: R.O.D the TV (anime)
Timeline: Post-episode 26 (AKA post-anime)
History: R.O.D Wiki

Character Personality: "She's just incredible...bright, tough, warm..." That's what Maggie says about Michelle, while Anita simply calls her "the ditzy one". Indeed, Michelle seems to have different facets of her personality that don't quite fit at first.

It may have been a result of her genetic modification that gave her the power to control paper as well as the false memories implanted to help Dokusensha along in their plans to utilize "Paper Masters" for their own purposes. Needless to say, upon finding out about these things, Michelle was speechless - and not in a good way. But despite these new plot developments, Michelle was determined to keep her relationships with her sisters, even though they were pretty much set up to live and work together. She clung on to her belief that despite everything, the life she shared with Maggie and Anita was real - although of course, she expressed her anger toward the people who have manipulated her and the others around her and set out along with them to destroy the institution responsible for it all.

Michelle is not a cold war machine, but she is a very efficient fighter. When it's time for battle, her mind is very much focused on that situation, and she can handle either the mental part of combat, or physical. She doesn't let her emotions get in the way; concern for her sisters and allies will be expressed through passing conversation and backing them up, but she won't shed tears until everything is over. In fact, she is rarely seen crying; take a shot at her family, try to break them apart, and she will crumble at last and blame herself if her sisters are caught in the crossfire...but she won't stay that way for long.

Her deep love for her (non-biological) sisters is often pointed out. While her other love - for books - can get in the way of her good intentions sometimes, in the end she really does care. A lot - she won't hesitate to put her life on the line for the people she loves. Michelle may show a selfish side when she ends up placing books over everything else, which usually results in careless mistakes that she will haphazardly attempt to patch up with the most scatterbrained of ideas, but those dramatic episodes and the overacting are typically short-lived and saved for the more normal side of the life she lives. It's almost like she only remembers her common sense when she's on the field, and then turns into a ditz (as Anita puts it) who doesn't think things all the way through and who shows off a bit every so often (like in front of a crowd of kids). For example, when she wanted to visit Anita in school, she went over the walls...only to find out from the gardener that she could have just used the front entrance, especially as she had already disguised herself as a student. Still, despite all that, she takes her responsibilities as the eldest sister very seriously - even if organizing their book collection isn't as high up on the priority list as it should be (book avalanches are not a rarity in their household).

In a nutshell, once you have Michelle's trust, you have a friend for life - loyal, clever, cheerful.

Oh, and did I mention that she appreciates anything - and anyone - cute?

Character Abilities: Michelle is a Paper Master, and as such, she has power over paper and she can manipulate it as she sees fit (creating walls of paper, making origami birds glide, and the like). Her preferred tactic is creating a bow and arrows out of paper, and her aim is very good. For example, she can shoot at and hit a falling bomb, which is instantly wrapped in paper as soon as the arrow makes contact, and she can easily knock a gun out of someone's hand with one shot. In combat, she is the cool-headed leader who supports both her sisters and makes the strategies.

In episode 5, she has been shown to have a high threshold for ultrasonic and subsonic sounds, due to her emotional stability. Though she doesn't look like it, it takes a lot to faze Michelle; a dry skeleton suddenly falling out of an iron maiden doesn't make her jump and/or scream. Even when her sisters or anyone she knows are in danger, she does her best to keep her cool and figure out the best strategy to save them.

Michelle has proven to be a skillful bodyguard to Sumiregawa Nenene. She also supposedly does translation work; Anita credits her proficiency in Japanese to Michelle and Maggie teaching her. Because the sisters make their residence in Hong Kong, it is assumed that they speak fluent Chinese as well as English.

Overall, Michelle is pretty clever, even if she doesn't look it at first. She always has an idea or two to offer, and judging from the mental skills she has shown in planning and strategizing, she may have been a relatively competent investigator as one-third of the Paper Sisters Detective Agency, if they have received a case in the past.

Character Weaknesses: Though she is very focused in battle, Michelle can be easily distracted by her ultimate weakness - books, books and books. She has often been scolded for spending money allotted for basic needs on books, and many bookstores in Jinbocho closed because she bought all of their wares. As they say, common sense is not always common; she often ends up putting her bibliophilia above all her other priorities and must be reminded to keep some cash for food and other more important things. One might say she is self-centered in this aspect, managing to overlook even her sisters' needs as well as her own in favor of new books to read.

Her strategic prowess does not always carry over into more everyday things, however. As part of a "token of appreciation", she presented a meal...that she actually ordered and expected reimbursement for, and she set up a fake diary that humiliated Anita (because Michelle didn't want to be embarrassed herself, Anita was passed off as the so-called "writer" and she didn't sound like she was joking when she mentioned this to her little sister). Michelle's dramatic tendencies (largely absent in battle) can also go overboard...to the point that one would wonder how serious she really is about certain matters.

Once, when she and her sisters were going hungry, she tried to remedy the situation by placing cookbooks on the table instead. Michelle has also been told that she is a bad cook.

While her emotional stability shines through many circumstances she and her comrades find themselves in, that doesn't mean she is a completely indestructible pillar of strength. When she, Maggie and Anita met again after facing the reality that fake memories had been implanted into their brains and their first encounter was actually a setup, Michelle broke down at last as she desperately tried to keep everyone together - after having a shouting match with Anita. Of course, she would pick herself up later on. Her sisters and her relationships with them (and possibly also with the people close to her in general) are two things that can break her emotionally.

[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]

Why your character should be a Meister: In battle, Michelle is in control, but she doesn't actively try to control anyone on her team. She leads her sisters and is often in charge of strategy creation, but is neither the main offense nor the main defense person; she is not always seen on the front line and usually fills the support role. Her disposition in combat is very stable; she will be able to effectively channel her wavelength into a Weapon and keep her focus.

Meister Ability: [ranked in order from most to least preferred; if only there was a paper-based ability.]

1. Soul Animate is the closest to Michelle's Paper Master abilities (although this is not limited to paper). At the same time, she will be restricted by size; usually she can control even sheets of paper almost as large as she is, perhaps even larger. It might also be more familiar to her, and she is capable of the amount of concentration required.

2. Soul Leader fits her role as leader and strategist of the Paper Sisters.

3. Soul Focus would make combat even easier for her, as her aim is already very good to begin with. And she typically favors ranged attacks.

[ SOUL INFORMATION ]

Soul Description: Calm, brave, bright (in both the intellectual and cheerful sense of the word), determined, caring, pompous

Soul Appearance: Michelle's soul is a bright sunny yellow, much like her disposition. Much like herself, the soul has flowing waves of hair, down to that tuft that tends to fall over her face. However, while her smile is genuinely cheerful, it's not a goofy one, or even a smirk. The soul's eyes are big, alight with cheer and at the same time seemingly saying, "I'll be here for you."

[ SAMPLES ]

First Person

[The feed switches on to reveal a rather beautiful young woman with long, wavy blond hair and wide brown eyes. She is grinning widely, and behind her are huge bookshelves you may recognize as those from the Shibusen Library. In one hand she clutches the communicator, and in the other she is trying to balance several books, bringing them to a nearby table.]

Maybe I should move here instead...there are so many books I've never even heard of! [She promptly sets the books down gently on the table with a soft thump and clasps her hands in front of the screen.] It's amazing! [Her voice rises and becomes louder on that last word, and someone off-screen shushes her. At least she gets the message and drops her voice.] Sorry.

This is the best part of going to another world...being able to read different books! I think I'll ask how long I can keep these...and if I can live here while I'm in Death City. I could stay here in the library forever - or at least, until I read everything it has!

Third Person:

Michelle opened her eyes and slowly sat up.

"Where am I?" she whispered to no one in particular - well, there really was no one around. The chamber was dark, and she squinted, trying to make out her new surroundings. They should probably open their windows more often, she thought to herself, getting back on her feet and picking up the paper bag that had been transported with her. It rustled as she retrieved it, and she glanced inside, making sure all the books she had bought were still there. They were - but there were two things that should have been brought with her (in her honest opinion), but weren't.

Her sisters.

"Maggie? Anita?" she called out. Her clear voice reverberated all around; from the corner of her eye she thought she saw the tall figure of Maggie, but the shape was merely a statue connected to another by enormous chains. The place was not completely intact; there were parts that were broken, scars of a battle fought some time ago.

Michelle's mind flicked back to her sisters - to her last, most recent memory. They had been shopping at a newly-opened bookstore, and Maggie had left with Anita to find some books especially for the younger girl. But just as Michelle wandered into a different section of the shop...

Yes, that was the last thing she remembered before waking up here. Wherever "here" was. Was this a new feature of the bookstore - a hidden horror house or something? But...

"Maggie!" Michelle tried again. "Anita!" Maybe they were outside. The woman started looking for an exit, clutching her paper bag close. Paper...well, if she needed to defend herself, she had ammunition. Several volumes of it.

That was when three screens she had not noticed suddenly displayed a redheaded man she had never seen before. She stopped in her tracks, facing him squarely, staring up at his face.

Michelle wanted answers. Perhaps he would be able to give them to her.

[ NOTES ]
Because Michelle is a very avid reader (the fact that the Harry Potter series are her favorite books has been mentioned in canon - the first episode of the TV series, in fact), she may recognize some prominent book characters and literature references. Is this okay?
